Grip by: Nina Hamberg

Grip: A Memoir of Fierce Attractions is a honest memoir of the life of it's author Nina Hamburg. Sometimes raw but always open Nina shows us her feelings and experiences with relationships.

A teenage Nina Hamberg lies in her divorced parents' old bedroom, trying to reason with a man who has crept into bed with her and threatened her with a knife. When offering to go to the kitchen and make him a cup of coffee only amplifies his rage, she surprises herself by uttering faintly: "What would your mother say if she could see you now?" He slices her leg and flees.

This encounter leaves her enraged by her own helplessness. Using that helplessness and the feigned concern in her mother toward the incident Hamberg decides to take charge of her own life and present herself as a capable, independent woman. She doesn't hide the effects of her assault, instead she enrolls in a karate class.

Hamberg recounts her experiences with extensive detail and candor, recognizing that such personal insight transforms her work from history to literature. From the silhouetted man lying next to her, who "gave off the heat of a dog's mouth," to the way her father sobbed "like a man in prayer" after cursing at her mother, she describes thoroughly each man in her life, clarifying the impression with which each encumbers her.

Grip is a chronology of Hamberg's lovers, whom she characterizes in detail using both sensory imagery and private anecdotes. She recounts relationships with men who take advantage of her financially, threaten her physically, and cheat on her. Although she submits to the manipulation and allure of individual men, she is conscious of maintaining her own personal integrity. While she may, by some, be considered a woman of abuse I get the feeling that she doesn't see herself in that light.
"All my life, I'd used reason to prevail but crowds had never parted for me before," she writes. "I could see how some people became addicted to their fury." Persistence becomes the weapon that helps release Hamberg from even the most masterful martial arts adversaries.
Hamberg provides  insight to demonstrate how she renewed her sense of security within herself. Although weakened at times by the influence of the men in her life she doesn't let it stop her from asserting her own internal strength. Finally she meets a man she whom she doesn't have to prove her strength too and no linger has to prove it to herself either.

As woman who has not suffered abuse by a man I cannot relate to Hamberg in that respect. However as a woman who grew up in the South and having heard a million times that "the man is in charge" I can relate. As a woman whose own sister suffered abuse at the hand of a man I can relate. Grip is a book that all women should read. You come away with a much better understanding of yourself and how you wan your life to be.

A MUST READ!!

The Fearsome Beastie by: Giles Paley-Phillips

The Fearsome Beastie by Giles Paley-Phillips (illustrated by Gabriele Antonini) is  about a fearsome beastie who is searching for something to eat and the children are at the top of his list. Will they be fooled by the fearsome beastie and his clever tricks?

I have to admit, this book caught me by surprise a little bit. I reminded me of the Grimm's Fairytales. As someone who has read not only our watered down versions but the originals as well I must say that The Fearsome Beastie does a lot to bring me back to my childhood days. The story begins like most with the monster lurking around in the dark. what you are not expecting is that a grandmother saves the day with a rather unexpected weapon.

While I enjoyed the book I enjoyed even more that my children were on the edge of their seats as I read it to them. They could not wait to find out what happened. That alone is the best review any book could ever receive!

Giles Paley-Phillips was born in East Sussex in 1977 and grew up on the south coast. He neglected his education to pursue a career in music. He spent a number of years performing extensively around the UK, including slots at the Glastonbury festival. In 2006 Giles released a collection of lyrics and poems in aid of Leukemia Research, a charity dear to his heart, having lost his mother to the disease when he was six. After the birth of his first son, and a chance encounter with a collection of nonsense poetry by Shel Silverstein in a charity shop, he was inspired to turn his attention to children’s writing. Giles lives in Seaford with his wife, Michelle, and their two sons, Elijah and Sonny.

My Favorite Networking Sites

Jessa asked me for a list of my favorite Networking Sites. There are so many you can choose from but these are the ones I use every week. What I do is set up a schedule and spend 30 minutes to-an hour each assigned day on the sites, chatting, commenting and learning. Here's my schedule:

Pitch it to Me is my favorite Networking site. I get a lot of reviews from there. I also get tons of information.

I have never gotten a review product from Mom Bloggers Club. I did win a Twizzlers prize pack once. I figure that with more than 10,000 members I am a small fish. Edible Details Giveaway

When you are planning a birthday party, wedding, baby shower or other event one of the first things you think of is the cake (or cupcakes.) Have you all seen the prices of those things theses days? My family calls me to bake any cakes, cupcakes, cookies, etc. While I openly admit that my cakes are fabulous, my decorating skills leave something to be desired. I am not bad and will throw an entire cake in the trash before letting someone see one that looks bad.

That was before I discovered Edible Details! I have fallen in love with this company. I can bake all the cakes and cupcakes I want and ice them simply. Then I add these fabulous fondant characters and my great cake because a fabulous cake. Yes that is fondant! I couldn't believe it either. There are so much you can do.

Brittany, the artist behind Edible Details has been working with cakes and cupcakes for 5 years. She graduated from "Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School" and has worked along side Beryl Anne Byrd in San Diego, CA in her cake shop "Just Fabulous Pastries".  Brittany also competed on TLC show "Ultimate cake off" twice last year. Brittany will even take your custom request!

While I would love to show you pictures of everything that Brittany does and how utterly amazing I think she is, we would be here all day. So I am going to show you a couple of pictures of items that I really like, including one of her customer creations (the giraffe cake.)

{WIN} Brittany is giving 1 lucky reader a 2" fondant character of their choice!! Just to let you know on the link there are sets but the winner is only receiving 1 character. Enter below for your chance to win.

The Help "Prize Pack" Giveaway

I cannot wait to see this movie! I have seen the previews and although I haven't read the book I hear great things about it!

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

Dreamworks wants to get everyone in on The Help so they are giving 1 lucky read a super fabulous prize pack.  Included in the pack is:

This is a women's tee and style.

The status update form will allow you to find out what i going on without having to send a email. All of the forms are on my Giveaways page, Listed in my side bar (for now), and I will add them on the scrolling giveaway widget on the top.
